Delhi to Manali Road Trip: Complete Route Guide

The Delhi to Manali drive is one of North India's classic road trips — roughly 540 km that takes you from the plains into the heart of the Himalayas. It's long (around 12 hours by road), but done right, it's as much a part of the trip as Manali itself. Here's how to plan it well.

The Route

Most taxis take the Delhi–Chandigarh–Mandi–Kullu–Manali route via NH44 and NH3. This is the most reliable road, well-maintained for most of the way, with the terrain shifting noticeably once you cross into Himachal Pradesh past Chandigarh — expect winding hill roads from Mandi onward.

Should You Break the Journey?

Doing it in one stretch is possible but tiring, especially if you're planning sightseeing in Manali the same evening. Many travelers break the journey overnight in Chandigarh or Mandi, splitting the 12-hour drive into two comfortable days. This also gives you a buffer if there's traffic near Chandigarh or road work in the hills.

Best Time to Go

• March to June: Pleasant weather, ideal for most travelers, though it's peak season with more traffic and higher hotel rates.
• July to September: Monsoon — the drive can involve landslides and slower stretches through the hills. Not ideal unless you're flexible with timing.
• October to February: Cold, often snowy in and around Manali from December. Beautiful for snow-seekers, but the drive requires a driver experienced with winter hill roads.

What to Pack for the Drive

• Warm layers — even in summer, temperatures drop noticeably as you climb
• Motion sickness medication if you're prone to it — the last few hours involve continuous winding roads
• Snacks and water — dhabas along NH3 are decent, but having your own supply helps on long stretches
• A power bank — signal and charging points get sparser past Mandi

Choosing the Right Vehicle

For this route, we generally recommend an Innova Crysta or Ertiga over a Sedan if you're traveling with more than 2-3 people or carrying significant luggage — the extra ground clearance and comfort make a real difference on the hill sections. A Sedan works fine for smaller groups traveling light.

Good Stops Along the Way

• Chandigarh — Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden, if you're breaking the journey here
• Bilaspur / Sundernagar — scenic lake views as you enter the hills
• Mandi — a good lunch or overnight stop, roughly the halfway point into the hills
• Kullu — worth a short stop before the final stretch into Manali
